With expensive items such as leather luxury goods, especially being that they’re vintage, it is SO IMPORTANT to take care of your things. I treat everything with care, regardless of how much I paid for it, because I see them as investments and sort of like parts of the family. The “shoe or bag family”, per se. Chanel is a different story. It is an expensive brand, regardless of what you’re buying; shoes, bags, accessories, leather goods, sunglasses, makeup; because it’s Chanel, it’s going to be more expensive. That being said, you should always care for your leather like you’d care for your child. Make sure your bags are stored properly; in the right kinds of environment. Not too dry or hot, but also not too humid or musty. Wrap the chains so they don’t create discolorations or indentations inside he bag. Try to baby the hardware so the color doesn’t chip off or it doesn’t get scratched. And most importantly, as it relates to this particular bag, don’t let the leather become so dry that it begins to crack and peel. It happens more often than you’d think with the older bags, but it can be avoided if you care for and store your bags properly.
When I purchased this small, white, vintage, single flap, the interior crumbling leather condition was fully disclosed. It stunk. It looked like the inside would fall apart when touching it. I could rub my fingers over the leather and feel the grainy, chalky mess that I knew I’d have to repair or replace. Unfortunately, once it’s gone past a certain “point of no return”, leather cannot be salvaged, and must be replaced. Chanel requires an original receipt to admit a bag to their “bag spa”, which I didn’t have because I had bought it second hand on eBay. I was SOL. So I took it to my trusty cobbler/leather guru, Michael, and he broke the news to me; I WAS GOING TO HAVE TO REPLACE THE INTERIOR. I kind of expected it but was also kind of crushed at the same time, but nonetheless, I ok’d it and the buttery soft leather that he replaced it with was a huge upgrade from what was previously there, with one drawback; it was no longer original. To me it didn’t matter. As a lover of a bargain, I figured “who would really care”? But believe me, the die hard collectors DO CARE! I got little inquiries for the bag based on what I considered to be a “fair price” for Vintage Chanel, and for the backbreaking hours invested in it in terms of strassing; in terms of my “art”. I decided to use this as a learning experience and list it on eBay as a 10 day NO RESERVE auction. I’ve fully come to terms that I’m going to most likely sell this bag for much less than I typically would, and I’m ok with that. We live and we learn.
So here she is: Crystal Rainbow Dark Swarovski Strass Vintage Chanel Single Flap Bag – in all her glory, for what will most likely be one of the lowest prices for a strassed Chanel, probably in history.
